Caleb watched Jacob brushing down the mare, as he walked to meet him with his arms laden with hay for the horses. The day was bright and frosty, but the wind was barely a breath in the air, so working outdoors was a pleasure for a change. It was no substitute for the summer, but Caleb was happy to be outside. He wasn't sure what made him think of it but as he walked from the barn to the corral, his thoughts turn back to the argument he and Jacob had during the snowstorm.

At the time, he'd been overwhelmed with Jacob's assertions that his attractions to other Alphas didn't, in fact, make him some heinous social outcast. But there was something else that had slipped by, unnoticed and unchallenged by him in the melee.

As Caleb approached the corral, Other spotted him, and, neighing her displeasure, she swung her head and danced away. She was much more comfortable with Jacob finally, allowing him to brush her down every day. Not that she needed it, but she found grooming pleasurable, so it fostered trust and got her used to physical contact with a person that didn't involve whips, or being forced to trip up, or any of the other cruel methods which must have been used on her. She'd tolerated weighted blankets on her back so well that Jacob had gone so far as to lay himself over her, to see if she would carry his weight. That hadn't gone so well, as Jacob's black eye attested, but she forgave him quickly, and they were soon friends again; the horse following Jacob around the corral at his shoulder, and nipping at his hat to try to get his attention.

But Caleb was a different matter. He couldn't get within fifty yards of her. He wasn’t offended any; he was aware that these things took time and patience, and every step closer was an improvement.

Jacob came to meet him at the fence, as did Horse, although his presence was less about helping, and more about getting fed. Caleb watched as Jacob shook out the hay. He was just in his shirtsleeves and vest, even though the day was bitterly cold, and their breath bloomed as clouds in front of their faces. His hat obscured his face as he bent down to work, his shoulders flexing with the effort.

Maybe if Caleb had been able to see his face he might not have asked the question, and risk the fragile peace they had found since their last intimate talk.

"When we last argued," Caleb ignored the huff of laughter that came from Jacob and pressed on. "Was I right in thinking you said that you gave up a marriage?"

Jacob froze. He stood slowly, drawing off his hat, and squinting into the sunlight. He leaned against Horse, held the Stetson in front of him with both hands and laughed nervously. "Ah. You remembered that then?"

Caleb nodded but didn't say anything more. Jacob fiddled with the brim of his hat for a moment before putting the thing back on his head and climbing out of the corral.
